National Geriatric Interest Group (NGIG)

The National Geriatric Interest Group (NGIG) is a student-run initiative under the guidance and support of the CGS.  NGIG is currently in its second year and has membership from 12 medical schools across the country, with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine being the newest addition this year.  The current membership also includes British Columbia, Calgary, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Queen’s, Ottawa, Toronto, McMaster, Western and Dalhousie.

The group has been very active so far this fall, developing education goals and interprofessional initiatives, supporting individual member Geriatric Interest Group (GIG) events and planning an educational half-day specifically for students at the Annual CGS Conference in April, 2012.  NGIG is also working to establish a student award for excellence in geriatrics and is building a partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Canada on a national level on behalf of each member GIG.  Further details on each of these initiatives will be made available as they become finalized.

Resident Geriatric Interest Group (RGIG)

The Resident Geriatric Interest Group (RGIG) is a national resident-driven organization that supports trainees interested in Geriatrics.  We have been active for 6 months and are proud to support new local groups in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Hamilton!  Each group has tailored activities to their own interests, some examples including journal clubs, community advocacy projects, mentoring medical students and involvement in research.

At a national level, we are looking forward to the creation of a blog celebrating amazing seniors through the use of interviews, photos and video clips.  If you are interested in participating in this exciting initiative, or would like to refer an interested resident, please contact ResGIG@gmail.com for further information.  Please also visit the newly added trainee section of the CGS website for academic resources and tips on how to start your own local RGIG!
