Canadian Geriatrics Journal

Canadian Geriatrics Journal (CGJ) – the Scientific Journal of the CGS

It is with great pleasure that we announce the rebirth of the official scientific journal of the Canadian Geriatrics Society as a new online publication, the Canadian Geriatrics JournalFormerly the Canadian Journal of Geriatrics, our mandate remains unchanged: to provide a “home for innovative aging research of a high quality aimed at improving the health and the care provided to older persons residing in Canada and outside our borders.”

I am honoured by the opportunity to assume the role of Editor-in-Chief from our previous editor, Dr. David Hogan.  Dr. Mark Rapoport (Associate Editor, Geriatric Psychiatry) and I are excited by the new submissions we are receiving, and also hope our membership will be patient as both Mark and I pester you for reviews.  As demonstrated at our last national conference, there is brilliant gerontological research being undertaken by our society’s members, and I am pleased to offer the Canadian Geriatrics Journal as a potential platform for this work.

Coming Soon – A New CME Journal

One of the key objectives in the constitution of the Canadian Geriatrics Society is “to promote the dissemination of knowledge of the clinical care of the elderly by continuing medical education of physicians throughout Canada”. In the past, the CGS had provided a CME Journal, “Geriatrics and Aging” to its membership. Unfortunately, “Geriatrics and Aging” ceased publishing in 2010 when its parent company went into receivership. In recognition of the benefit that a CME Journal brings to members, the Council of the CGS has been exploring the possibility of resurrecting a CME Journal. Their efforts have met with success as the Council has identified a suitable publisher and is currently negotiating a contract with that supplier. It is envisioned that the new CME Journal will be launched in 2011 and that by 2012, regular editions will be published. The topics will once again cover clinical topics that members feel will be of great benefit to their practice. The editorial team will be comprised of Dr. Barry Goldlist (Editor-in-chief), Dr. Shabbir Alibhai (Associate Editor-in-chief), Dr. Frank Molnar (Associate Editor-in-chief), Dr. Angela Juby (Associate Editor), Dr. Robert Lam (Associate Editor). Content for this CME Journal will be solicited from CGS members around the country allowing the CGS to tap into its areas of national expertise.  We will eventually develop a formal process to assess our members’ educational needs, but until then, do not hesitate to let us know what topics you are interested in (bgoldlist@mtsinai.on.ca).

The Editorial Team and the CGS Council are excited by the prospect of a new CME Journal and look forward to working with various CGS members on articles that will be both practical and highly relevant to our practices.
